Start with the basics. What is a noun? A noun is person, place or thing.
Person, it could be you or your old haggard mother-in-law. Place, it could be Greenville, SC, NY city. Thing, it could be a tool that you have in your garage that you does not even have a name.
Example: "Hey, Mary will you grab a gallon of milk while you're at the store?" John yelled through the the old, rickety door.
Mary is a noun in the above sentence, for she is a person.
